How Porcelain Veneers Work
Veneers are ultra-thin, tooth-shaped pieces of porcelain that are permanently bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. When multiple veneers are placed over the most visible teeth, it can produce the appearance of a perfect, white smile.
Each veneer is made to very exact measurements to ensure that they perfectly enhance a person’s oral and facial anatomy. This means that veneers will have an appropriate size and shape that improves the overall aesthetics of a smile.
Receiving porcelain veneers takes about three appointments. The first appointment will involve a cosmetic dentistry consultation, which helps patients make informed decisions.
When a patient decides that veneers are right for his or her needs, teeth will be prepared by removing about half a millimeter of tooth enamel. This non-invasive process is important for providing a space for the veneer to lay. Then our dentist will take impressions of both sets of teeth, photographs, and digital X-rays. Impressions and images will help our team determine the specifications needed for each veneer.
Then, these specifications are sent off to dental laboratory for their fabrication. Once veneers are complete, a patient will return to our office to finalize the treatment process.
Before veneers are bonded to teeth, the surfaces of teeth will be lightly etched to create the ideal surface necessary to place veneers. Then, a bonding compound will be applied to teeth and veneers are attached. Final adjustments are made as the bonding material dries.
Once the process is complete, patients will leave our office with a beautiful, flaw-free smile.
