Healthy Teeth are White
This is not necessarily true. Although teeth should be relatively white, the shade will vary from person to person. Cavities and tooth decay are both associated with darker colors which is probably why most people think white teeth are healthy teeth. However, decay may be concealed by neighboring teeth, even if the brushing surface is white. Teeth tend to naturally yellow or discolor as people age. Although everyone loves a bright white smile, teeth that are a darker shade are not necessarily unhealthy.
You Should Not Brush Bleeding Gums
This is quite the contrary. Gently brushing gums that tend to bleed is healthy for them. Irritated, tender gums that tend to bleed when brushed may be in the early stages of gingivitis. This happens when plaque has built up allowing bacteria to irritate the gums. Gentle brushing with a soft bristle toothbrush is a healthy habit for all the soft tissues in the oral cavity and it is the best way to reverse gingivitis.
Skipping the Floss Won’t Hurt
This is just wrong. Flossing helps remove the plaque and bacteria which build up between teeth and along the gum line. Over one third of your teeth’s surface are covered by neighboring teeth and gums. Flossing is the best way to clean these covered surfaces where the toothbrush can’t reach. It is important to floss daily to keep these surfaces clean and free of plaque which can cause gingivitis.
